My 7|22 Memories

I thought I was going to include this in my previous post that had my thoughts about 7|22 but I took up too much space.  So, I figured I’d share some of my favorite memories from 7|22 in light of the news that it will no longer exist.  Most of them will be listed based on the series it involved.  Disclaimer – my memory is not so great so this may not all be accurate.  And yes, I know some of these weren’t from 7|22, but where just Louie.

Worship:  That Thing We Do- I learned what true worship is from that series.  I own the DVD because it was so good.

The Guilt Trip is Over- This may not be the right series, but Louie had a door on stage, in a frame, and had a volunteer nail it shut with a nail gun to emphasize that we should block satan out when he comes to throw on guilt in an effort to bring us down.  I’ll never forget that image.

Getting a Grip on Glory – I learned what it means to live for God’s glory.

I Talked to God Today – I learned that prayer is a lifestyle, not an event.

Prayer: A Remix – I laughed countless times as Louie exposed the odd nature of some very common prayers.  I think of this series EVERY time somebody prays……Bless Me…..Be With Me….or Watch Over and Protect Me.

Pursuing God- Watching Louie eat the Krispy Kreme donut while smiling as big as he could.  I hope I can truly “taste and see that the Lord is good”.

Life Interrupted – Everybody that attended 7|22 had to take a CD outside and listen to it in their car…..basically they experienced it like I did.

Treasure – Louie’s illustration of dumping all those tennis balls into the large container representing material things, then taking them out, and dumping them into the kingdom container to represent investing in things that have eternal impact.

Frying a turkey the week of Thanksgiving and watching Louie talk about the importance of not having too much oil in the pot, then having too much oil in the pot and spilling some on his shoes.

Giving away cars and tons of other stuff to single mothers, soldiers, and organizations that help people in need.

I think it was one of the Christmas-time 7|22′s when people who came to follow Christ because of 7|22 went up to light a candle.  Tons of people lit candles and I totally lost it, and I was watching it on video after the fact.

That’s just a fraction of the great memories I have from 7|22.  Needless to say, you will be missed.

7|22 – You will be missed

7|22, or 722, or 7:22, or 7.22 as it has sometimes been written, will no longer take place on Tuesday nights in ATL.  I heard about it from Carlos on Twitter, which linked to his blog post, where he had this video:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XDU46C4obsc

7|22 had such an impact on my life that I felt I had to blog about it.  It was probably about 5 years ago when I started watching 7|22 services online, thanks to a tip from a friend who lived in ATL at the time and attended every week.  Louie taught like few preachers I’d ever heard, and the impact on my life was immeasurable.  Sometimes I would sing right along………with a video………that wasn’t live……….and it was powerful.  I will admit that part of the draw for me was simply style preference, when talking about the music.  But the messages Louie gave were clear, helpful, challenging, and most of all, passionately inspirational.

I had grown up in church, given my life to Christ, and was pursuing the American Dream.  7|22 launched me into a path that changed all of that.  From there I listened to messages from Andy Stanley regularly, attended Passion Conferences and dove head first into learning what it takes for a church to engage culture and reach people the way Jesus did.  I read tons of books, attended conferences, and listened to all the interviews and conference messages I could get my hands on.  In 2004 I dreamed of what a church that was designed to reach unchurched people would look like.  I believed (and still do) that very few existed in Baltimore, and desperately wanted to change that……….but still hadn’t really thought of working for a church.

Little did I know that today I would be working for a church like the one I dreamed of.  Not only that, more and more churches are being planted and who knows, maybe one day my BIG prayer will be answered.  All that to say, thanks 7|22 for pointing me towards what I believe God created me to do and helping me become passionate about God rather than just going through the motions.

Friday Five

Perry Noble – Initiator or Responder? – Great thoughts about how we act…or react.

Vince Antonucci – Proud – Vince announced that he and his family are heading to Las Vegas next year to plant a church on the strip.  When he did, his church……..applauded.  That’s a kingdom mindset.  Sure, they have questions and concerns, but they didn’t think about “me” first.

Caery Nieuwhof – How Do We Know We’re Winning?  – Always a great question to ask

Tim Stevens – Thinking about Parenting – Interesting results from an informal survey on parent’s influence with their kids.

Nelson Searcy – How to Survive an IRS Audit – Great tips for any church minister (based on tax status)

Orange Tour

At CCC we use reThink for all of our children’s ministry strategies.  When I joined the staff team as the children’s minister I knew my strength was not in preparing content for children’s ministry.  But, I knew reThink had exactly what I wanted and we’ve used it since day 1.  I love their desire for churches to partner with families, their belief in “less is more”, and their focus on community as the centerpiece.  Some of our team and I have been to the Orange Conference but this year we opted to attend the Orange Tour instead.  Specifically, we’ll be heading to the Juiced Event in PA on September 26-27.  The main reason we chose to attend the tour instead of the conference was cost.  In the past few years that we have attended conferences that cost around $300, plus flight & hotel, very few people have come.

We knew we could get more people to attend the tour because it’s shorter, closer, and cheaper.  I’ll miss some of the aspects of the conference that we won’t get at the tour, but that’s totally outweighed by the fact that we’ll have a lot more people going.  Right now we have 11 signed up to go, and we’re shooting for 20.  CCC Kids volunteers:  I know I just emailed about this 2 days ago but I can’t say enough that you don’t want to miss this!

I’m looking forward to the tour for many reasons.  The content, the networking, the team building, and the fun.  I’m also hoping to talk to Carey Nieuwhof if he’s there and has time.  Ever since we heard his story and the story of his church (now called Connexus Community) I’ve been amazed at what he and his team have done.  In short, he turned a church around.  My respect for leaders who have “turned the ship around” in church world is off the charts.  Mainly because I understand how hard that is, how strong the leader must be, and how patient the leader must be in order to do that.  Kudos to all of you who have tackled that huge challenge!

Giftedness & Ability

This past Sunday I preached at CCC.  I am fortunate to have the opportunity to do that once or twice a year.  After this past Sunday I’m ready to not do it again for another year!  In preparing the message I felt like it was obvious I was working a little bit outside of my giftedness and ability.  Teaching does come up on my spiritual gifts tests, but usually 3rd or 4th.  I think the less gifted you are at something, the harder you have to work to do it well.  I definitely had to work harder in preparing and delivering that message.

Fortunately we have people on our staff team who are great at evaluating everything service-related and they were a big help in the early stages of planning the message.  We give feedback on everything as well and that is invaluable.  The only thing left is for me to listen to my message (which I hate of course).

Part of the stress leading up to last Sunday was the stress from 2 months of solid work before that.  Now there’s a little breathing room for a few weeks before we get back into the fall rhythm.  This Saturday morning I’ll be flying to Aruba with Jennifer, my sister and her husband, and my parents for a week.  I can’t wait.

Friday Five

Here are my five favorite blog posts from the week:

Orange Families – There is one question that I always get asked – Adam shares some great thoughts about what makes a great volunteer leader.

Brian Jones – We pray too much, not too little – The title alone is enough to grab your attention.

Vince Antonucci – Question #3:  What Do Different? – Interesting that the two things he mentioned are to key things we are working on at CCC to prepare for multisite.

Tim Stevens – An Apple guy remakes Microsoft – I love Tim’s thoughts on how it applied to church.

Shane Craven – Top Ten Reasons to Plant Churches – Good list.  Quite a few of those are the reason CCC was started – particularly #3 & #8

Louie Giglio Planting a Church in Atlanta

I just listened to the Passion Podcast from June 27 where Louie finished it out by responding to the rumors that he and Chris Tomlin are planting a church in Atlanta.  Louie confirmed that he and his wife Shelley have been feeling called to plant a church for some time now.  When I first mentioned this it was a rumor and I posted some questions that came to my mind, and I knew would come to the minds of others.  Here they are, with some of my thoughts (which mean absolutely nothing!)

Why?

Louie answered that one on the podcast.  I’ve always loved how Passion has tried to listen to God’s leading rather than establish a specific plan that would be in place for decades.  I think God uses both but clearly the way Passion has gone about it has worked for them.  It would be hard for anybody who has heard Louie speak often, to question their motives.

Why Atlanta, where Louie’s home church North Point is alive and kicking?

One thing I have to clarify is that I believe Atlanta could probably use a few thousand more churches, so I think planting another church there is a great idea.  North Point will come to people’s minds, as it did mine, because of Louie & Andy Stanley’s friendship and some people will think competition.  I don’t think it’s out of the question that a lot of people would leave North Point to help with this new expression Louie will help lead.  I don’t think that’s a bad thing though.  How great would it be if North Point intentionally partnered with Louie to send “church plant missionaries”?  Of course, that’s assuming Louie and that team of planters would want that.  North Point has a kingdom mindset and this would be a great way to really act on it.

What does this mean for Passion?

Louie didn’t seem to comment on this and I have no idea but if it doesn’t go on, it will be missed.  However, the impact thus far will last for decades.  One of the biggest reasons I am in vocational ministry today is because of Passion and Louie’s teaching.  That doesn’t mean much by itself but I’m sure that’s true for others as well.

How many churched people will show up because of star appeal?

As I mentioned above, I think a ton of “church” people will want to help out.  Once again, I don’t think that’s bad as long as they “get it” and are hoping to contribute, and not just consume.  Churches that exist to reach the unchurched always attract Christians and so a big challenge is how to clearly communicate the vision and strategy of each church so those Christians stay for the right reasons, or head to another church because it’s obvious they wouldn’t fit.  Louie would probably have to deal with this more than most churches, but Louie communicates vision as clearly as anyone.

How will that be received by local churches who will probably whine and cry like crazy?

I just hope they’re supportive and don’t whine and cry.  It’s interesting to me how the most kingdom minded church leaders seem to have the largest, fastest-growing churches while the “me/mine” leaders struggle.

Chris Tomlinmentioned on the podcast that some magazine stated that Atlanta would have 2 million more people by 2020 than they do now, which would make it the largest population growth in the U.S.  There are some great churches in Atlanta, but not nearly enough for the hundreds of thousands, if not millions, of lost people there.  I prayed for Louie and the team because that’s all Louie asked for and I hope that as much as it depends on them, they are successful.  I’ll be forever grateful to Louie and the Passion team for the impact they have had on my life and I wish that for thousands of others in Atlanta.

Friday Five

Here are my five favorite blog posts from the week:

Perry Noble – A Mistake That Damaged My Marriage – I can’t comment on this or it will give it away

Nelson Searcy – How to Wow! – Interesting thoughts on how to wow church attenders

MultiSite – Would Payton Manning make a great campus pastor? – The first in a 4 part series of blog posts about the similarities between good QBs and good campus pastors.

Jay Hardwick – That’s Quotable:  Tom Clegg & Warren Bird – Jay has some interesting thoughts you should read.

Perry Noble – 50K – Are you bothered?

Twitter

Twitter is a way to share what you are doing throughout the day and see what others are doing as well.  It’s a website that allows you to post what you’re doing in 140 characters or less and see what others are doing.  When I started, I wondered if I’d ever keep up with it but it is really easy and isn’t a distraction for me at all.

Twitter has grown in popularity extremely fast in recent months.  They’ve had multiple problems with all the extra usage because of how fast it has grown.  One disadvantage of a fast growing internet product is that it can get to be too much too quick.

Chris Elrod had a post asking if Twitter has killed bloggingBen Arment doesn’t seem to think so.  I would have to agree with Ben.  I follow a handful of people on Twitter and through their blog and their twitter updates definitely don’t compete with why I like to read their blog.  Here are some good thoughts from Tim Stevens as well.

Random Tuesday Comments

  • Yesterday our staff had a all-day training with a mentor of CCC.  I love it when we learn together as a team….especially when it’s about how to be a better team.  As much as that type of stuff fires me up, I was ready for bed afterwards.
  • My friend is at StudentLife Camp in Daytona Beach this week and Louie Giglio is speaking and Chris Tomlin is leading worship.  Apparently during the leaders meeting Louie confirmed the rumor that he and Chris are going to plant a church in the ATL.  I helped spread that rumor in this blog post – to all 6 of my readers.

Update:  Louie talked about this briefly on the Passion Podcast from 6/27

  • My laptop has something wrong with it.  It locked up when I turned it on today, and it won’t really do anything.  As best I can tell, the power is somehow messing up the memory (RAM) which of course means it can’t run.  I was not happy because my message notes were on there, and not anywhere else.  Fortunately I was able to get it to run just long enough to copy what I needed.
  • Writing a message is hard, but that isn’t news.  I’m just reminded of it every time I have to prepare one.  I’m praying that this message will help us all in very practical ways.
