The 5-Step Volunteer Recruiting Framework

This episode lays out a proven, repeatable system for recruiting volunteers in your ministry. Whether you are ramping up for a new season or recovering from a post-pandemic volunteer shortage, these five steps give you a clear path forward.

  1. Create a “stop doing” list. Before you recruit anyone new, eliminate the tasks and programs that are draining your time without producing results. Free up capacity first.
  2. Build a prospect list that is 10x your need. If you need 10 volunteers, you need a list of 100 names. Cast a wider net than you think you need.
  3. Make personal invitations. Mass announcements do not recruit volunteers. Personal, one-on-one asks are what move people from the audience to the team.
  4. Create clear roles with defined expectations. People say yes when they know exactly what they are signing up for. Use volunteer job descriptions to remove ambiguity.
  5. Onboard and follow up. A strong volunteer onboarding process turns a first-time yes into a long-term commitment.
